Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya)"Nara":
Miroku means "compassion". He was born to
a mother who kept the law of Buddhism and was filed with great
mercy. He trains in Tusita (where Shaka
was before being born in this world). Buddhism teaches that he will
return to the earth 5,670,000,000years after Buddha's death and become
Buddha himself.
Both of these masks are famous in Eastern art
as "the thinking statue",and they are two of the most famous sculpturse
in ancient Japan. Also, they are highly recognized as classic examples
of the "archaic smile",and are included along with the Sphinx in Egypt
and Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa as the "three great smiles of the world".
